Tourism Complex Trang An – Ha Long Bay on the shore

The Tourism Complex Trang An located at Ninh Binh’s northern province has good geological and historical characteristics, professionals informed at a global workshop organised in Ninh Binh on July 24th.

With their recent archaeological excavation reports and research on geological, lecturers at the workshop told that the area had unique natural beauty and geological characteristics meanwhile featuring heritage that assists draw an image of how people survive in the old times.

The workshop targets to make a scientific profile on the values of history and geology in the area to turn in to UNESCO for approval as a natural-mixed-cultural heritage site.

To Professor Paul Dingwall’s opinion from the International Union for Conservation of Nature at UNESCO, the most important part is to show the unique value of this site that involves its scenery and environment. Nevertheless, it is very critical to showcase evidence that the area has been through a complex time of geological improvement, he added.

Trang An was once a part of Hoa Lu, the country’s old capital for more than 10 centuries ago, which should be considered in the profile, Dingwall stressed.

Professor Richard Engelhardt from UNESCO’s International Council on Monuments and Sites also affirmed that the profile should say that early people living at the area had adapted very well to local atmosphere during the most rapid weather changes.

It is a real deal to connect all the clues to make a persuasive profile, he added.

Pham Cao Phong, general secretary of Vietnam National Committee of UNESCO, told that the country had no officially approved heritage area in archaeological terms.

“The Trang An Tourism Complex is the 1st ever to be considered to get a multiple title,” he said.

Dubbed “Ha Long Bay on land”, the whole area covers 10,000 ha, including the 3 parts of Trang An Ecological Site, Tam Coc – Bich Dong Site and Former Capital Area of Hoa Lu. The region is divided with karst topography such as limestone and mountains, caves and lakes.

The Trang An Complex is home of many fauna and flora with five hundred kinds of floras, seventy-three types of birds, forty-one typess of other animals. Researchers discovered traces of ancient people dating back five thousand to thirty thousand years ago in Trong and Boi caves nearby.

Bui Van Thang, chairman of local People’s Committee, assured that in the very near future, the province will focus on restoration, effective exploitation of natural resources and preservation for tourism, which is a right way for economic growth.

The scientific profile will be finished by September 2013 before getting submitted to the UN cultural body together with a profile on Cat Ba Archipelago (for the recognition of Natural Heritage Site). The final decision will be carried out in 2014.
